Modern Foreign Languages

At Colley Lane, our language teaching focuses on Spanish but we also embrace and celebrate the languages spoken within our school community. Our pupils are introduced to Spanish in Year 3, when they begin to develop the 4 skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing. Children are introduced early on to the relationship between sounds and their written representation, and use their new phonics knowledge to read and spell first words, and gradually more complex phrases and sentences throughout the 4 years of study at Key Stage 2. Key grammatical concepts such as gender, verb conjugation, adjective agreement and word order are embedded within a lively and engaging curriculum, and revised frequently to ensure that children can use them with increasing confidence.

Spanish lessons frequently involve games, songs, picture books and practical activities such as role plays, class surveys, etc. that maximise pupil engagement and make their learning relevant and fun. We want our children to have a really positive first experience of learning a language, and be equipped with the learning skills they need, to take them on whatever journey they choose!

How can you support your child with Spanish?
You do not need to be able to speak Spanish to support your child at home. Simply talk to your child about what they have been learning in their language lessons that week and ask them to teach you some new words or phrases. Or perhaps they can teach something new to a sibling or family member. You can also share any knowledge you may have about the countries where the language is spoken, look for Spanish food products on supermarket shelves or listen to Spanish music. There are also some great websites online that you can encourage your child to visit and explore, such as those below:
