EYFS and KS1 Reading

10th January 2023

Learning to read is an important life long skill which we teach at Colley Lane. We help children to develop a love of reading from an early age through teaching phonics and through sharing stories at story time and in Whole Class Reading sessions.

Little Wandle is the phonics scheme we use and they have a really helpful parent website which you can access without a login. There are useful videos and information leaflets you can download and view to support your child at home.

Whole Class Reading gives the children the opportunity to discover texts and learn about the text in more detail, helping to bring the story to life.

Big Cat Collins Ebooks Online is one of the ways we share reading books in school. Please contact your class teacher if you need a login or have any questions.

This term the children are also visiting our local library and reading to children in different year groups to share their enjoyment for reading.

You can support reading at home by sharing stories at bedtime, recapping taught sounds using the phonic home learning sheets and encouraging your child to read their assigned reading book. For younger children, playing games like i spy, predicting what could happen next in a story and acting stories out are great ways to engage children with reading.

Please download and view the documents below which were shared with parents at the reading and phonic sessions this term.  Any questions please speak to your child's class teacher.
