World Book Day 2023

2nd March 2023 – Tags: Activities

What a celebration we had of our love of reading today! World Book Day 2023 was launched with a very exciting parade of all of the teachers and pupils and the imaginative costumes, words and treasured books that had inspired this year’s costumes! There were gasps of delight, many pointing fingers and giggles-a-plenty as we all tried to name the character and showed our appreciation of the wonderful effort and clear enjoyment on everyone’s faces.

Pupils also enjoyed assembly time with Mr Simpson today, (who was dressed as ‘The Boy’ from Charlie Mackesy’s ‘The Boy, the Mole, The Fox and the Horse - one of his favourite stories). Children had the time to: reflect on their first favourite story, get excited about how they will spend their World Book Day voucher and the free books that they can swap their token for, as well as enjoy a very imaginative rap from M C Grammar, that celebrates some of the most popular children’s book characters. Watch it at home, if you would like to: The World Book Day Song by MC Grammar

We have celebrated reading all week in our lessons. Each year group was given one incredible story and it took over their whole curriculum. Children were inspired to: write, complete creative art work, have empathetic conversations in PSHE and even found fascinating links to Science and the wider curriculum in these cherished stories. Ask them about the work they completed throughout the week.

One of our favourite activities to enjoy with pupils on World Book Day is, of course, reading our favourite stories to them and watching their eyes light up as we inspire them with our childhood favourites. So we sent our teachers on a Reading Safari and each class got the chance to enjoy a storytime with a teacher from a different year group.

Finally, the grand finale! Reading is a life skill and we aim to engender a love of reading for each and every one of our pupils. At the end of the day, pupils were encouraged to visit their Year Group Bedtime Library with their parents/grandparents/carers and to select a story to share at bedtime this evening. This means the celebration of all things reading can continue long after the school day ends and enables our pupils to end a wonderful day by sharing a chosen book with a family member. Happy reading everyone!
